Dear lutenists
Nice that we are taking using lute also in "different" repertoire. Here
is my tiny contribution:
Already in the 1980's I transcribed the "Original Rags" by Scott Joplin

source. I cannot anymore remember what

Hi Rob,
I have three Korg CA 30 tuners-- one in my trumpet gig bag, one in my horn
case, and one for the lutes. I've found them less susceptible than some of the
others, (particularly, I believe, my quick tune), to harmonic spoofing. Its
range runs from C1 to C8. It's among the smallest at

Dear All:
I've made tastini and body frets using the small wooden cooking skewers
available in most grocery stores. Split lengthwise, they can then be cut to
the proper length, and are easily sanded and glued (or taped). And very
cheap at several dozen to a package.

Ken Brodkey, just sent me some photos of a recently completed 10 course

After thinking about last night. I have to say, after chips, salsa, and
guacamole, the company of some lovely ladies, and 3 or 4 margaritas, the
jazz actually started to sound pretty good!

I found a lute in a rather unlikely flick: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,

playing, a lute in a glass cabinet with other early instruments. The movie
is certainly worth watching, however. Quite amusing!

For those of you who are not "well tempered", how do most people afix
their tastini to their Ren lutes? I have been using a piece of cut
scotch tape which holds a piece of fret gut in place. Over time however
the tape begins to come loose and I start to get buzzing from the 3rd
course. Of course th

Hi Thomas,
I think this is good advice. Knowing what I know now, if I could buy only
one ren lute it would be a 10c. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

When I was a total newbie, I read the same item on Martin Shepherd's web site

Some things are easily enumerated, such as his genius for risky (yet
natural) modulation, something entirely absent in a mediocrity like Salieri,
who always played safe.

Hi Tim,
my teacher advised her students to buy 10-course lutes. The reason is that you
can play nearly every piece written in "vielle ton" on it.
It's practical.
In the meantime I have learned that earlier music doesn't sound right on a
larger instrument but I still think a 10-course is a good

Could you enumerate what those "aspects of his style that demonstrate
