I like lyx, but have no particular interest in tex. I do need
to produce SGML, HTML and PDF (at least) documentation.

Under Layout -> Document
change "Section Number Depth" to "-1"
now, instead of using Section* in your paper, use Section. The headings
won't be numbered, but they'll show up in the TOC.
