This is usually caused by a misconfiguration in your SMTP outgoing server
settings for a specific account. I can't comment for Google Mail because thank
goodness I don't need to use it. But it's virtually guaranteed that the
problem is due to the password or log-in method.

Sorry I forgot to say if you haven't got your f1 f2f3 and so on set to be used
as standard you'll need to add fn to control+f2!
To change that setting go to system prefs and select keyboard!
