To get to Internet Recovery, press Command+Option+R at the chime after power on. You may need sighted help to pick from available wi-fi networks from which to boot. I recommend using Ethernet (including Thunderbolt/USB adaptors from Apple) as these require no sighted help. -- You received

Hi, All that sort of thing is dealt with in the Verbosity options that you've been modifying. It sounds to me that you may be using one of the other third party voice options as they have been known to behave differently than expected. Not sure if there is any way around that though.

Just to update everyone, I eventually figured out part of the problem. This Mac came with Mountain Lion, so my Mavericks upgrade held onto the legacy versions of Numbers, Pages, and iMovie. All told, erasing those three, plus the current version of iMovie since I never use it, freed up around

I changed my sound buffers so audio games would play better, and this caused my screen reader to work better too. First, I'd see if it is even that; have a sighted person watch as you perform normal tasks. If Windows reacts immediately but speech lags, consider changing the sound buffer size.
