We usually send an email to mailman (which includes the pre-defined password)
for each subscription and use the 'confirm' option in mailman so the user gets
a confirming email and I know their password.

You know how, despite insisting that you really need to upgrade and reconfigure
some critical systems, there is always something even more pressing so it
doesn't get done and then the whole thing catches on fire? That's what has
happened to our custom-build Mailman subscription system.
in Mailman 2.1.9? (Remembering that I have a working version of the
list on a restored snapshot of the server, where everthing actually does work.)
I say this based on the results of applying the change Mark suggested, and
recovering from the troubles it caused. Sorry to include all the gory

If this error message helps, here is something that doesn't work on
the production machine but is fine on the development one:

P.S. There is a good reason for not allowing the digest option here. The list
is announce-only, and this particular distribution list receives a one-weekly
email which lists only the subject lines of all of the messages pos

email method to approve/deny, but now that the web interface is down, I NEED
this to work correctly.

So, I found a somewhat useful script out there on the internet, and I'm able to
save & run it, but it always generates a random password. I've made what I
think are a couple of simple changes that should allow me to set a specific
(unitary) password, but that's not what the script repor
aren't really interested in knowing five
passwords for the five different lists they are on and unsubbing from each.

Right now, all seems good, I have set the oldlist to emergency
moderation until the posters of this announce-only list catch up to
the change. We'll go through various tests
as a first step, confirm

a bit paranoid about the setup, and would like to be able to make
non-catastrophic mistakes.
If so, any opinions on whether to use cp versus ditt

it sort of hunted around for an available DNS server somewhere in the
world for EACH outbound message. Once the sysadmin tracked down what
was happening and reinstated the server's own DNS resolution,
everything returned to normal speed.
