Just finnished the Aeneid and had a quewstion about the meaning of purple
in the book. I know from a Tom Robbins book (Skinny Legs and All- verry
good if you haven't read it) that purple is the Phoenican color and they
used conch shells as their dye. I've also heard that they were the first

The purple dye discovered by the Phoenicians, made from the murex, and used
for making the purple stripe on the togas of Roman magistrates is one
thing. The word "purpureum" in the Latin poets is something else.

I'm going to read the Aeneid in English for the seond time after having
read Fitzgerald's version a few years ago.
However, does anyone have a particularly favorite and I would like a
justification why? Should Virigl's work be better rendered in prose or
verse?

Virgil's manuscript after he died (the author himself was unhappy with
