A while ago, I asked for some ideas on a paper for the future of GIS. A
number of people sent some suggestions, and I promised to give it back to
the list. Its fairly long, so read it only if you are in the mood.
The views expressed were a result of a small amount of thought, some

Alan,
I would suggest it is one or more of the DIP switches on your

let the user set up how the software interprets information from
hardware an vice versa. Since you haven't said that you have changed

I enjoyed reading your paper. The thought at the end was particularly
appealing for two reasons:
1) the limitated 2Dness of most current GIS will not be acceptable in the
future - especially if you play 3D games (or your kids do)!
2) more importantly, you have highlighted the
Dear All,
Possibly the only problem is my minor capability in working with raster files
in MI.
A raster map in ASCII format (866 x 654 integer data points) was given to me. I
just want to visualize the data after applying various filter algorithms to it.
So does there a way exist in MI to

Sure take a look at:

Dear List members,
Many a times I saw the mail saying I formatted the PC and
the particular function is not working (I , myself also felt the same
few times )
Why don't we compile a list containing what should be do before
formatting the PC or reinstalling the MI.
I can think of few points

Milo,
if you go to http://software.geocomm.com/utilities/mapinfo/index.html
we have compiled a list of some useful MI resources. Within the list you

Hiya All
i seem to be asking a lot of questions recently but i guess that's what
we're all here for..
i basically have two coverages one of which needs to be clipped using
the other. This is not a problem as i have a utility that does this. The
problem is this, the clipper layer is in
All,
Is there a way to use MapMarker to reverse geocode and give out
zip+4 information given the facility's lat and long coordinates?
I'd like to update the zip field and am confident of the lat and
longs. To build a table of all possible zip+4 values and geocode
that, is HUGE and time consuming.
You could try using Format$() function like for example:
Update "table" Set WGS84_MIN_X =
Format$( Str$(Int(WGS84_DEC_X)), "00") +"°"+Format$(
Str$((WGS84_DEC_X-Int(WGS84_DEC_X))*60), "00.")

If all you want to do is visualize it, one way that can be doen
with MapInfo out of the box would be to simply import your pixel
values as a table, create x, y coordinates where x = rowid mod
866, and y = fix(rowid / 654) (something like that; depends on
the order your data is in), and then
I do not know how exactly to change the location of spool directory.
but you may directly spool to printer from printer properties --
spool setting --- directly to printer.
I think that can solve the problem.

BUFFER INACCURACIES
Does anyone know why buffers become increasingly more inaccurate on certain
bearings above distances of 4000+ Nautical Miles??
eg. For buffers centred on the UK, the buffer distances are correctly
measured to the South (to South Africa), West(the USA) East(to Russia)
Hi,
I have a question which I'm sure is a FAQ, but have not been able to locate
the answer, my apologies if it's right in front of my face, but I just don't
see it. :)
I have some records in which I need to update a text field. How do I update
them en mass?
The scenario: adding a text label/id
All,

for single and triple band, band interleave files?

Hi,
Can anybody help verify a possible bug in MI v5.5?
Open a workspace with a few tables and a layout, minimize MI,
go to StartSettingsPrinters and change your default printer. KaBlam!
Instant Dr. Watson, for me anyway.
I'm using MI 5.5 on NT4sp4 on a single PII450 w/256 ram.

Hi Matt,
After you select the relevant vectors, you can do a Table Update
Column. For table to update use "selection". You would then type in
the text you want in the expression builder window and then MapInfo
would paste that text into all records that were selected.
Cheers,
Karl
Sometimes can solve the problem. My new problem is that with printing
directly to the printer I exceed the disk space in the plotter. (It has a
2gb hard disk in it)...

It sounds like you are using an HP 2500 series plotter??? Try obtaining the
RTL driver for an HP2000.
It allows for you to spool to a local hard drive in increments before
sending the entire job to the plotter.
Also try settiing the plotter resolution from best to normal or fast...
Hope this

Large buffers have never been correctly implemented in MapInfo Professional. MapInfo
are fully
aware of the problem since I've nagged them about it
Does anyone know how to understand or to find references about programming
with mapbasic particulary in telecom/wireless aplication?
Any inform will be very apreciated.
Thank you
