It's an historical thing: mc's virtual fs was the fundation of the Gnome

I just tried it on the console (no X) and the issue vanishes. This
makes my believe it has nothing to do with mc, rather it's a
misconfiguration of my terminal emulator.

Bug is that Enter does here go to next option below "Shell connection",
does not start the option.
When there is no bug opened is window with entry to put user@server etc
= starts the option.

It doesn't show up in the panels (no, even M-. does not help) and
I can't launch mc on the server and “SFTP” into my local machine,
since mc is not installed on the remote host.

marks the file “/usr” and I press ctrl-j, then the terminal line
underneath the “Hint:” shows
