higher wavelength light which is used for higher pitch sound gets
reflected off the case
If I understand what you plan to do, why do you need a computer at all. You
need a CD player with a digital optical output.
What you are doing isn't digital audio extraction if you are using the digital
output of your sound card. You are just making a digital copy of the CD on to
MD.
