'83 300D window washer kept spraying in the wrong direction and I found that
it was debris coming from the tank that caused it. Put a very small fuel
filter in line between the tank and and the nozzles and haven't had the
problem since.

Chain and sprocket wear together, but the socket wears much more slowly. Take
a look while you're there, easy to replace later if needed. Keep in mind that
if this cam sprocket is worn, so will the IP timer sprocket and the crank
sprocket. Those are not so easy to replace.

I would look at a couple of things to start:
1.) Vacuum reservoir. The O ring where the vacuum line enters this can dry out
and crack, leading to leaks. If it's bad enough, the pump can't keep up with
it and vacuum levels are erratic and sometimes nonexistent.
2.) Isolate the various vacuum
Can it be replaced later without breaking the chain apart?
