I’ve been staying away from ACC servo equipped cars for that reason. That price may be high, but There just haven’t been any worthwhile W116 300SD’s out there, and I’ve always lusted for a good one. Then, I think about the simplicity and ease of maintaining my 240D, and that $5500 will do wonder

If outside in the cold on the ground is the only option, then I agree with Bob.  Installing is best done on a lift with a flame wrench and 6' cheater available, and in temperate weather.  You need clearance under the car to swing that 6' cheater.   The other option on 123 and newer, is to take
