I'm looking at a 1987 420SEL - 103Kmi, everything works, little to no rust.
Timing chain changed, oil changed often, new radiator.
What are the issues on these particular cars? I've only owned diesel MBs.
Also, the guy wants $4k. Reasonable, or 2x reasonable?

Nice long wheel base Benz, low mileage for its age. Only a test drive will tell

Oh Don, I don't care about gas costs. I've driven fuel-sippers long enough
that it's time to balance the scales.

OK then, the long 126 chassis is great. The 560 has even more power,
but I would look at condition before quibbling over engine size. I
really like the 300SDL. Same chassis, wonderful Diesel engine.

It would be a steal if it was 89 and later. Those were more desirable

If you ever drove a 560, you would see what the difference is. You
would then want one to play with on the weekends. Speaking of which, I
really need to get out and un-mothball mine.

Skip the 420 and 560, if I was going that far for my money I'd go all the way

Assuming you had to spend that much to fix everything that is broken would be a
good bet you didn't buy it in the first place. If there is a lot that needs
fixing its pretty much a sign that the previous owner was a idiot and didn't

Well that assumes that you can find an owner idiot that will sell you
a fixed perfect w140 for the same price as a broken w140. Since most
of that money is going to fix faulty engineering it's hard for a
smart owner to prevent it from becoming toast even if you do all the

The 89-91 had the updated interior, updated seats, updated 10 speaker
