My records say the 300SDL got 22-25. All in town, and mostly short trips
at that. It never felt underpowered to me.
Best,

I agree that the SDL is the one to get. The 420 never felt powerful enough
for me to warrant the extra two cylinders. M103 powered 126s aren't so
bad... not fast, but a good all around car. I'd get one.

Any W126 is a good car. The 560's are gas hogs, but otherwise very
very nice. Best one of the bunch is the SDL as far as I'm concerned
-- good performance, excellent milage.

Yeah, but it doesn't go 800 miles between fillups either.

He's pretty desperate. Show up with money in hand and $500 might get you the
car.
I always wanted a 300SEL (W126 chassis, that is.) I know it would probably be
a little underpowered, but an economical car to drive with a big ass passenger
compartment.

Sadly the 420 usually gets better gas milage along with more power,
the M103 in that car is a bit breathless. No better than my TE, at
any rate -- 19 mpg on the highway, probably a bit better when I get
the gas leak fixed (again).

Indeed. Ours never felt underpowered,
and it turned in a pretty reliable 27MPG.
I think best-ever was 31MPG.
