All the lighting for permitted construction is already required to be LED
in CA, which probably has more associated cost than this solar thing. One
wonders which will create/save more energy over time.

They would have to mandate it. Of the places where I’ve lived that had off-peak

failed or been discontinued. My current home has such a setup for my AC, which
I removed when the new AC was put in. I called the
Gas is dirt cheap here. There are no electric water heaters, clothes
dryers, or stoves. Many ovens are also gas.

The problem is that the 250w panels are 24v native and the 100w are 12v. If you
run a 24v panel at 12v you lose a bunch of efficiency to the point where the
cost savings of the larger panel are lost.
Being 12v is handy in that we've got 12v RV lighting in the camp and 12v phone
chargers etc.

My personal desired impact is financial. If it makes sense financially for
people, all the environmental arguments are pretty moot. If we had more sun
on site, we would have a home array for that reason. And if having an array
paid a lot more than farming, we would use some land for that.
On Thu,
What's the desired impact, more of your power from older, dirtier plants and
less from plants with the latest technology?
Mitch.

GOOD STUFF! Thanks!
NYC and chitcago going into blackoutfor days or weeks is one way to
cure the problems. Though the stench would be bad for several weeks or
months.

This is the exact reason why I would prefer to have a solar system and battery

In the event of a hurricane and major losses of infrastructure I could survive

I could see that.
We looked very seriously at geothermal when we had the behemoth of a house in
Indiana. The builder had clearly cut corners both in design and selection of
the HVAC system, and what it had was running on the ragged edge and horribly
inefficient, despite only being 6-7 years
I wonder if they would do an exchange, geothermal for solar?

While I understand that no one wants to be told what to do with their home or

know how the state would deal with the upkeep and maintenance aspect. If
someone is going to mandate that I have to be an energy producer, I
