A Seres of Unfortunate Events has culminated in her well looked-after '85
300CD being reduced to a sluggy nonturbo that can't even reach 25 mph. Here
is the progresion:
1) Car wouldn't shift beyond second gear. Dealer detected and replaced a
leaky oil cooler line (car was low on translmission fl
I would go back and check the whole vacuum system in detail, especially the
modulating valve on the IP and the overboost line from the manifold.
Your inability to get ful revs with the accelertor would have me looking at
linkage from the pedal to the IP, too.
I think you've got multiple
I too vote for linkage if you couldnt shut it off with the emergency
stop. Check the bushing at the firewall, this deteriorates and fails.

Yes on the line from the manifold to the IP -- this was the problem on
the boy's 300SD. You might just have to clean it out where it exits the
manifold -- if it is goobered up there is no signal to the IP and it
gets out of whack, no accel, low top speed, etc. That also affected
tranny shifts
Thanks - great suggestions. Fuel filters are fine. I just wonder whether
our futile attempts at shutting off the engine triggered a more serious
problem. Did you mean a vacuum line from the manifold to the IP?

It actually is a pressure line from the manifold, conveys turbo boost
pressure to the IP or ALDA or something down there, comes off the back
of the intake manifold and runs across the firewall then down to the IP
assembly.

If you look where the linkage comes up from the pedal on to the firewall
there it is. about 2" and mounted to the firewall. The rest of the
linkage goes laterally from here to the front of the engine. If the
emergency stop didnt work then you have binding somewhere. Get someone
to stomp on the acce
Replace the fuel filters.
Clean or clean and repair the boost control line from the rear or the
intake manifold to the ALDA on the injection pump -- these engines
clog that line pretty fast. Verify that the overboost solenoid is
holding pressure.
Find the missing bushings in the throttle l
There was a split line near the firewall that prevented the emergency stop
from working. This was repaired so it now shuts off normally. I'll check
the linkage tomorrow AM.

when they're out of whack. And they're complex enough
that there is plenty to go wrong. On the plus side,

I checked them AGAIN this AM for the 10th time and nothing looks out of
whack. The firewall rubber block thingie seems intact. Nothing obvious -
no disconnects or misconnects. I will try again tonight when SWMBO is home

I've yet to make one of those... Even then changing the filter with all
the ATF dripping from the valve body is still a bunch of fun. I guess I
could suck it out and come back a day later?
I don't think you can get the ATF out of a Benz tranny that way. I
looked at it when I changed the fluid and filter on mine, and it did not
look like the fill tube went down to the pan, or there was a clear path
to the bottom through the tube. I might be wrong. The 700R4 fill tube
goes right
If the pump is worn enough to not generate enough pressures, I suspect
that most other parts are similarly worn. At that price, I would not
stop at changing the pump. I'd do as the others have suggested - buy a
rebuilt from Rusty and have it installed.

can GUARANTEE there are other parts and seals ready for replacement.
Many (but not all) o-rings were so brittle that they broke on removal.
At minimum, with the pump out you're 90% of the labor time/cost to go

Rusty's tranny is a 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty. Have you tried filter
and fluid change to Mobil 1 ATF? That cured my '82 CD of it's slipping tranny
that was diagnosed as needing a rebuild by MB
