now that we're on the topic of hydraulic fluid and jacks, how often should
a
floor jacket be serviced and the fluid changed. I've had mine about 10
years now, and only use it about 4-5 times a year, and it seems to work
fine, no leaks
What's in hydraulic jack oil that makes it special? Is it more like
motor oil, or more like ATF? Out of desperation I put some motor oil
from a random bottle lying around into an old jack that I needed RIGHT
THEN. I think it was Quaker State 10W40 conventional. The jack
seemed to work fine.
Every oil has a blend of additives to help it do the job it is designed
to do.
The jack was unsafe before you added the oil because you had to add oil.
If there is a leaking seal on an jack there is a possibility that the
seal will let go entirely and that ain't good.
Usual safety warning, do

I don't beleive I am doing this.
The choice of oil is no more than what the seals can tolerate, i.e. ATF, W10
motor oil, 3-in-1 oil, H2O (less recommended if not distilled), etc.
I would not use brake fluid.

Well, Automatic Transmission Fluid is just hydraulic fluid. And
a hydraulic jack is a super-simple hydraulic system. So I would

I suspect it's ATF without the detergent package. You
want dirt to settle if there's no circulation and
filtration system.
