2005-07-04 Thread JR
Violating my normal procedures, I popped for first run tickets tonight to WAR OF THE WORLDS. My reaction? Well, it's pretty strange... depending on what specific scene or sequence, I can completely agree with *everything* that has been said on this list about this picture -- both the

I enjoyed the film. It was a rollercoaster ride. It didn't compare with the first nor did I think it was Spielberg's intention. The end was better in the original because it seemed to flow better. But despite that last third, it still was fun. The entrance of the aliens is not to be missed.

[MOPO] More 2 bits worth of War of the Worlds - right on Kirbster!

2005-07-04 Thread Glenn Taranto
I have to second Kirby's comments on WOTW. It's an OK sci-fi pic with exceptional special effects, and a terrific performance by a child actor. My sentiments exactly. OK, I'm not a Tom Cruise fan but that aside I just could not buy him as a father. Not the father of a rebel teenage boy. He's

[MOPO] Subj: [MOPO] Endless Summer

2005-07-04 Thread Michael Wong
Happy 4th, Can someone remind me how to tell if an Endless Summer os is from the original release? It's distributed by Cinema 5, but has no other distinguishing marks. Of course, I found it at the very bottom of a box of mediocre 70's and 80's posters. Also anything I need to look for on On Any

Earl, You were probably OK. Most of the time the information would not have been captured until you hit a button to send it. To catch it before that, they would have to use some incredibly sophisticated keystroke capture technology. The thing everyone needs to remember is this: No

[MOPO] 2 bits worth of War of the Worlds - a shame

2005-07-04 Thread Glenn Taranto
JR, JR wrote - "It's not Truffaut or Fellini or even George Cukor or Frank Capra, but what is these days?" Isn't that the point in a way? And isn't it a shame? Not that every director can't have a miscue - but there doesn't seem to be a standard of excellence anymore. Perhaps I'm too

I think it can really be boiled down to a few simple things in films today.. with rare exception. 1) same old ideas rehashed for the 10,000th time 2) lack of any intellectual value 3) blasting action to push up your adrenalin 4) films made just for the sake of making films making money and
