I have used lit groups for several years. My students usually have a lit
group book and then what I called an independent or "buddy" book. The
buddy book is one of their choice and they read whenever they have free
time. So far, I have not seen any problems with students keeping their
books sepa
I don't understand the thinking, but it is very scary. I hope Missouri

How long does it take your teachers to administer the assessment and because
you have been doing it for 3 years- has administration gotten easier and
quicker?

I think so too (one at a time). At that level they are managing multiple
storylines with in one text. I want to be certain there isn't too much
interference to that work. I find kids can read for the main story line
but miss the subtleties when they finally get to somewhat more complex

Doing literature circles would be helpful because the students can share jobs
and focus on what they are assigned; when the groups meet you have discussions
and they can help each other. Doing a mini-lesson on plots, character etc can

Good Morning - I need some input on reading at 4th grade. Is there any
research (or personal thoughts) that suggest that 4th/5th grade students should
focus their reading on one chapter book at a time? My thinking is that it is
difficult to keep track of plot, characters, etc. if they are read
Hi Jacki.
I've used the F&P assessment kit as both a classroom teacher and now as a
curriculum specialist in two different districts. I would definitely
recommend purchasing one kit for each teacher. The kit contains two texts
at each level (one fiction and one non-fiction), but only one copy of
We have one per teacher at each grade level which works well.

Our school has been using the F/P benchmark systems for 3 years now. Each
classroom teacher has their own kit. We believed if it was an important
assessment than it was important for each teacher to have their own. Support

Just a question. How long would the written part of the test take place? How
much class time is taken (per student) to get through the testing?

Hi Jacqueline,
Sorry, it occurred to me that might have been unclear. I was not present when
the box was opened from the publisher so unsure also as to how it's set up when
it arrives, if at all. The 'sleeves' were the clear plastic three hole punched
'envelopes' (open at top) that we put the c
Hi Jacqueline,
Our school is smaller (1 or 2 classes per grade level). Without looking up the
current F & P info -- the set we have included an 'alternate' binder so that
you could make sure the student was working with unseen text (a new little
book, that is, new to him or her). At that, one

Hello,
Our school is considering purchasing the latest edition of the Fountas &
Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. We are not sure if we need to order one
kit per classroom, or one kit per grade level (we have 3 classes per grade
level) We currently use Reading A-Z Running Records and corre
