Hi,
Regarding phonics, I had an extremely wise professor (28 years ago!!) that
said, Phonics has a place, but not in reading.

Hi,
I do think that thematic teaching does include reading and writing while
teaching social studies/science concepts as well. The reading strategies are
reflected in guided reading group or mini lesson, and the strategy is also
incorporated in their writing. For example during our butterfly
Hi,
That is how we did our standards based report card. The standard was
the heading, but the skills that the students should master were under
it. We shaded the areas for the report card to show when the skills
were assessed. We presently are using trimesters, so the first
trimester has many

Hi Lisa,
We have the HM program and it does not resemble anything what the original
program looked like. We now assign strategies to the anthology stories and so
they can be used to teach a strategy or to model a strategy. This probably
doesn't help you, but it does make the series bearable.

One of the best resources I found for non-fiction text to connect text
to world is National Geographic. Their first grade edition is thematic
so it covers one topic unlike the older grade versions. It is really
worth looking into.

Hi,
I taught first grade and am presently teaching second. For students to
function independently without interrupting the teacher during stations,
I would say you need six weeks, depending on the group it may even go to
8 weeks.

Can I have a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dad? Can I? Please?
