Hello all!
What is BogoMIPS? What does the number depend upon?
The reason of my interest is this:
With a standart kernel (2.2.14-15mdk) my PentiumIII-500 (Katmai) (or
whatever is measured with BogoMIPS) receives rating of 499 point something.
When I installed the 2.3.99-pre9 kernel, the number
Hello!
Have just installed QT2 (it's needed for KDE2, which doesn't seem to work
for me, anyway), so it's still fresh in my mind. :-)
You don't have to recompile anything. They just have a typo (?) in the
installation instructions. The file should be /etc/profile: at least, that
worked for me.
Hello!
I tried to use aKtion to play my MPEG files, and the speed of playback is
~1fps. What is the reason of it?

Any suggestions?

Hello!
My current hard drive configuration is:
C: 4.5Gb, bootable, Windows98 SE
D: 4.5Gb, Windows2000
I have a dual boot system, and therefore use a Windows2000 boot manager.
I plan to shrink D: to 2.5Gb, and make a third and fourth partitions:
Linux's / and swap. Obviously, the Install will
Unless something goes wrong the answer the answer is yes. You can also
do
it by adding Linux to your Win2000 boot loader.
You mean, I shouldn't install LILO?
And how do I add Linux to Win2000 boot loader?
Thanks,

Hi List,
During boot up this morning I saw a new message that said;
/dev/hda5 has reached maximal mount count
mount count check forced
???
What have I done to generate this 'mount count check'?
After running through the mount count check all seems to be well and
running smoothly, but
Hello!
My current configuration is, a 9Gb hard drive divided into two 4.5Gb
partitions - C: and D:. I have Linux installed via Lnx4Win.
Now I want to install Linux onto its own partition. Will Partition Magic be
able to decrease the size of D: to 2 Gb, and with the remaining 2.5Gb make a

In /sbin there even is a simpler solution:
/sbin/poweroff
Isn't just
halt
easier? Or am I missing something?

Hi all!
After I've installed X 4, when I tar -xvf something, I get this error on
every file, but the files *do* unpack:
$ tar -xvf kde-qt-support-1.90.tar
tar: couldn't set uid 1002 gid 1002 using chown: Operation not permitted
The error message is not exactly as it is, this is my translation
Open /etc/X11/XF86Config and make sure that your cyrillic fonts directory
is in there with all the other "FontPath" Entries. I also found that xfs
does not need to run on bootup because 4.0 includes the support built in.
Done that - no effect. Well, the KDE interface and desktop items are now
Hello all!
Have just installed X 4.0. Pretty smooth (apart from XFree86 -configure
not working for me). BUT:
1. My Cyrillic fonts are gone. That is baaad. I did download the
cyrillic fonts package, but during install it said something like
'duplicate font name, skipping'. How do I add fonts
Hi all!
Just read the Quake II how-to. I'm wondering, why in Linux OpenGL is only
for 3dFX cards, where it is (IMHO) poorly implemented, and not for NVidia's
Riva TNT2? I have the latter, that's why it's so frustating... Is there any
plans to make OpenGL for TNT2?
If the question is stupid, I'm
Hello! When I try to upgrande E from 0.16.3 to .4:

Hello!
Does anyone know of other programs with the concept like XFishTank -
i.e. to make the desktop background animated? The 'Fly through space'
would be great! :-)

Hello!
My Mandrake distro came with DR0.16.3 release of E. Now I downloaded the
0.16.4 RPM release. Do I need to uninstall .3 before upgrading to .4? Or
just `rpm -i' it?
Thanks!
Hello!

problem: added mem=128M after loadlin.exe in config.sys :=)
Next question:
Somehow Linux starts with my DOS's C: disk unmounted, so I have to mount
it manually every time. Is there any way to do it at startup, as
Hello! It's my first ever installation of Linux, so please be nice :-)
So. I installed it into my D: DOS partition using Linux4Win (not the
best variant, I know... Just didn't want to lose my 8Gb of information
:-). And in Linux, when I get info about memory, the system tells me I
have 64 Mb,
