Has anyone using Mandrake 9.2 succeeded in installing Adobe Acrobat
Reader. Somehow the linux-ar-405.tar.gz program has defeated everything
I've tried.

During the install I mistakenly clicked on the automatic login feature
which takes me directly into KDE. Is there a file I could edit that
would return the choice of window managers at bootup?

In my quest to get WP8 installed on LM8 (it worked wonderfully on LM7.1) I
discover that there were libraries (libc5) used that are no longer used in
this newer Mandrake.
But are older libraries compatible with newer ones? If not, then I guess it
is not possible to reinstall WP8 into this
Since installing Mandrake8 I cannot get WP8 for Linux to install.
Is it probable that the newer Mandrake version has dropped certain files
necessary for WP8?

Paul,
When I run that command I get the message:

You may want to run lpstat -a and see what printer is set up as the
default printer.
Paul
With Mandrake 7 when I try to print a specific file with the lpr command I get the
message: printer unknown.
Yet the installed printer - a HP Laserjet 4L - prints just fine within WordPerfect.
And the command # printtool reveals that that printer is operating at lp0.
Is there some further
For the longest time i get the following notice on boot up of my Mandrake 7.0:
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/opl3.0 failed
loading midi module opl2 failed.
It mustn't be a critical part of my system as everything I need runs ok. But I was
wondering what I might do so that the boot up
I haven't been able to locate the init script you refer to. Could you suggest where I
might look?
Thanks.

Is there a linux command, similar to shiptrak (I think) which one invokes when about
to move a computer physically. This is a command to stabilize the reading head on the
harddrive.

There was a command in Dos that stabilized the reading head on the hard drive when you
were going to physcially move the computer. I think it was shiptrak. Is there a
similar command in Linux for this operation?

First thanks to Michael, Phil, Alexander and Vic for replying to my mail
problem.
Second, an apology for a basic error. It is not Sendmail that is causing me
grief, (as I indicated) it's FETCHMAIL.
And for some reason, when I try to install it, I get the message that I
need "smtpdaemon" before
Finally managed to get Mandrake 7.1 installed after going down a number of
blind alleys.
One final (hopefully) glitch. Sendmail is not installed. When I try to rpm
it, I'm informed that I need "smtpdaemon".
Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated.

Tried to install 7.1 but didn't get passed "initializing CDrom" before the
deadly "Transsocket" message appeared.
(Am using SiS 6326 card). And yet, Mandrake 6 worked well on my machine.
Tried the "Linux text" entry but got lost.
Somewhere I read there is a bug in the graphic install mode
Go to www.gnu.org/manual/tar/index.html
You can download the manual which should answer any questions on the subject.

Although I can operate my internal ATAPI-IDE Zip drive, at boot up I get the

I fully support the recommendation submitted by Edison Gica. If the talented
people at Linux-Mandrake would put intelligible documentation on-line
regarding the installing and tailoring of each new release, at least we would
have a common point of departure in our quest for solutions.

Yes, as some have already suggested, there is a great need for better
documentation as Mandrake issues new releases.
Could the very talented people working behind Linux-Mandrake create on on-line
manual regarding the installation/tailoring of their product.
Being an on-line document, it could

Thanks to Ron and Eric for great assistance in getting the Zip drive working.
I see that this 100 meg. disk has 12 blockgroups. When I tried to tar my
/home directory onto the Zip drive it stopped after using only one block.
Consequently there was not enough space to archive the whole directory
When I (as superuser) invoke (using Mandrake 6) the 'make' command, I get
'command not found'. Is there something I have to do to get this operational?

Any instructions I read about getting my IDE ATAPI Zip drive up and running,
keep referring to a /usr/src/linux directory from within which I'm supposed to
make some module change to the kernel.
Problem is that there is no such directory.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks John and Paul for the suggestions. My swap partition ( 64 meg) seems
adequate as it was before.
I ran "setup" and removed a few non-relevant programs with no significant
improvement.
I guess I'll have to live with the more leisurely pace or else switch to a
less memory-demanding desktop.
Since moving up to Mandrake 7 from M 6 I find that the loading time for
KDE, and even the Kmail program inside KDE takes much longer than it did in
Mandrake 6.
All I can think of is in the latter stage of install I agreed to the
default list of programs to be automatically booted at startup -
