right?

automatically detect which arch you have?
I don't know if this applies to anything other than
IA32, or AMD64. If you can, get hold of a live Linux
iso - one of them that runs off a CD + RAM. If it
works, then theres a good chance others will too :-)

No, AMD64 is an entirely different set of CDs. Every package is
recompiled for 64-bit AMD64 instruction set.
