I've just installed Mandrake 7.0. I have a
Diamond Monstor Fusion video card (like a 3dfx voodoo banshee). Everything
was working fine as far as the display goes, but then something happened and
every time I execute startx and go into gnome or kde, the screen is so dark
that I have to turn

Thank you for your help. I looked at the XF86Config file, but I'm not sure
exactly how to fix it.
It seems that my system is using the accelerated X server, because the
regular one doesn't have such a high res. I remember checking off 3 choices
when I installed, and 3 appear under the 'ac

Your XF86Config is broken.
Run Xconfigurator or xf86config.
If that doesn't help, try starting with a different depth (i.e. startx --
-bpp 16).
