There isn't that much of a difference. If you don't have a fast connection,
then I wouldn't recommend going through the trouble of downloading it.
Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between Helix Gnome (or
whatever its called now) and the Gnome that is installed with ML 7.2?
If you have the bandwidth, Helix (now Ximian) GNOME is definitely worth
downloading and installing. Most official Mandrake updates are to fix
security bugs, not to introduce new features. Ximian GNOME, on the other
hand, provides the latest updates for packages (after being checked for bugs,

Yea, that's some kind of bug in Helix-Gnome. The same thing happened to me
too. To "fix" it, create the file ~/.Xclients-default if it's not already in

Hello,
Does anyone have Helix Gnome installed on Mandrke 7.2 ?
If so in your opinion is it better than the standard install of Gnome?
Would appreciate any comments and insights.
Thanks,

I asked the same question on the list about a week ago and the response I
received was great (thanks everyone).
To summarise, there are several people on the list (including myself now)
that are successfully using Helix GNOME on Mandrake 7.2. The Helix download
page only mentions Mandrake
Has anyone tried Helix GNOME with Mandrake 7.2? The download page says it is
compatible with Mandrake 7.0 and 7.1, but there is no mention of 7.2. Is it
possible to keep the Mandrake application menus (editable through menudrake)
with Helix GNOME?

Yes, you can install with 7.2. However there are a few problems with doing
that.
First your menus get screwed up a little bit in Gnome. You have multiple
links to programs in the menus and they become pretty cluttered.
Secondly MandrakeUpdate won't work right with updates concered with
I've tried disabling sounds in the gnome control panel, but I still get
sounds in helix. Is there another way to do this? These sounds are
driving me nuts.
Thanks.

I have been using Helix GNOME for some time now, so I believe I am well
qualified to answer your questions. Here goes...
1. I was running GNOME during the Helix GNOME installation. I was careful,
though, not to run too many GNOME apps. All I had open was GMC and a few panel
applets, just in

Sorry, I answered out of order...
3. Do you like Helix Gnome?
4. Do you recommend it?
There are a lot of critics out there which have said the only thing they
don't like about Mandrake 7.1 is the fact that Mandrake chose NOT to use
Helix-Gnome in their distro.
Some people,
I tried doing the Helix download thing recently. It got
part of the way into the download then quit on a
segmentation fault, complaining of something to do with a
missing "gtkhtml" file. Anyone know what's up with that?

Whichever suits, it's not fussy.
2. Will it mess up my current gnome configuration?
It will update all packages to Helix

It doesn't matter. If you install it in Gnome, you'll have to logout and then
back in for the changes to take place.
