I posted this earlier, didn't get any help on

I lost every device out of my /dev/sound folder due to some freak
Mandrake snafu, so I have no sound in Gnome. Can someone tell me
how to reinstall the sound devices? Having to reinstall Mandrake in

Riker,
You need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst for that.
Just remove the "offending" entry, and after the next boot you're fine.
Contrary to LILO, you do not need to run anything for the changes to take
effect, the file will be read at boot time.
Good luck

Hello, again!
I really screwed something up on my wife's Linux box (yes, she loves
Linux and now she hates me!) and need to reinstall. It's a duel boot
system with Win ME. If I do a fresh install of Linux, will it still see
WinME? And if not, how do I go about keeping ME recognized on boot
Yes it will.
You shouldn't have any problems doing a fresh install.
You can probably get back into your wife's good graces, if you do not
format the /home partiiton ( it will leave all of her settings intact.)
Just make sure er user name is the same.
Good Luck

First, thanks for responding! Actually, I can boot the system and
everything runs fine except I can't access her CD-ROM (trying to install
Mozilla off of the Mandrake 7.2 CDs). What I think happened was this:
I tried to install a CD-Burner in her machine, and in doing so I

Yes, it was an IDE burner, and I'm really beginning to believe this is
how I screwed things up. In what file/directory can I find the menu.lst

Thanks,

I'm reinstalling Linux due to stupidity. Now however, the installation
stalls at "formatting hda1" it has already formated the other
partitions. Hda1 is the / partition and so far it has been sitting there
for an hour doing a 5-10 second blink on the HD light. Any suggestions?
