You need XFree86 4.0.3 or higher in order to run the nVidia drivers. Mandrake also comes with XFree86 4.1.0 so you should be right there.

Before you issue 'startx'.. You should run XF86Config (slackware)..
xconfigurator (redhat/mandrake?)... or XFDrake (Mandrake).. anyways, you
need to configure X before you can run it (properly).. or else you will
probably have problems with your mouse/video/etc etc..
