Sounds like you did an automatic install under Mandrake. The automatic
install does not install the dhcp client. You had to do that manually. You
give no indication of which (if any) Window Manager you use so:

I am a newbie to Linux also but it sounds to me like you need to change the
display configuration to less (may want to start all the way down to 640 X
480). If that isn't it then there may be someincompatibility with
the video board and the driver that is causing the problem.

I had this problem installing MDK 7.1 on my Compaq Presario laptop. I reran
the install and said cancel to the request and it seemed to finish ok. What
am I missing that I would have gotten with the Extensions CD?
