Thanks for the tip on Junkbuster. I used to use it but it definitely
doesn't work for some sites. I'm not sure why.
Wouldn't this be an awesome feature for Konq? Have a menu where you
can list domains that should never ever be visited? It seems like it
would be a really easy feature to add.
I have a question: There are some websites which I never want to
browse or load from, ever. Is there a way to tell Konqueror to never
fetch anything from a certain domain? Specificly, I never want Konq
to fetch anything from doubleclick.net for any reason. I just have no
interest in anything
For some reason on my Mandrake 8 machine, I can't ping localhost. I
had an ethernet interface which I disabled, and now I can't ping
localhost which means lots of things (like printing) are broken. Any
sugestions?
Thanks

Go to
Type /sbin/ifconfig. Is the lo interface up?
Yeah, but it has no addr. I got it working by doing this:
ifconfig lo addr 127.0.0.1
and then localhost works, printing works, etc.
Let me point out that the Mandrake net config tool is very very
broken. Most of the time I try to start it, it
I need to be able to display, enter, and maybe even print Devanagari
script with Linux Mandrake 8. I did some web searching and there are
a bunch of Devanagari links and references, but I am quite confused.
What do I need to install to get Konqueror to display it? Can I get
my xterms to work
Hi, I'm looking for some games that will run under Mandrake 8.0. I
have a reasonably fast machine, with some kind of usable graphics card
and a fairly good soundcard. I'm looking for a 3D first-person
shooter game. Something like Counterstrike would be absolutely
perfect. Any sugestions? I
Tom, other than gaming what uses do you see for Windows? I've been
looking forward to scrubbing it from my hd's, but your comment gives
me pause.
As far as I know, for most users, there is no use aside from gaming,
and even for gaming, there are native Linux games, and apparently
quite a few
I have a question: I have Mandrake 8.0 with a Deskjet 882C. This is
well-supported and comes with great drivers. However, if I want to
use it, I have to go to the control center and install the printer
every time I reboot. This is very inconvenient. Is there a way to
get Mandrake to remember
It seems very difficult to get the Linux java stuff working. When I
installed Mandrake, it came with a bunch of java stuff:
/usr/bin/java /usr/bin/javac /usr/bin/javadoc /usr/bin/javakey
/usr/bin/javap
However, when I set my java interpreter to /usr/bin/java in Konqueror,
it wouldn't run
I have seen that KDE2.2 is available on the mirrors now:
http://download.sourceforge.net/mirrors/kde/stable/2.2/Mandrake/8.0/i586/
I think I would like to upgrade, but I'm not sure how. There are many
rpms in that directory, and I don't know which ones I need to install.
I assume that if I
why you can print from StarOffice directly?
do you have CUPS installed?
do you configure a printer in StarOffice?
I did had problems to print from StarOffice maybe I can help you. By the
way, what printer do you have?
I figured out the solution: Buy the Mandrake CDs, and reinstall the
I am currently using Mandrake with StarOffice. I can create and print
documents easily from Kword, but StarOffice does a much better job
importing MS documents, so I would like to be able to print from
that. However, I can't print from it. Also, when I save the
documents as Postgscript, the
I have figured out a way to print from StarOffice under Mandrake8.0:
In StarOffice, print to a file, which generates a postscript file.
Take that file and use gs -sDEVICE=pngmono to generate a png file.
Use Imagemagick to resize the file to a smaller size.
Open the file with Konqueror and
I have a Deskjet 882c printer. It works fine with kword (sucks with
printing graphics though). It has a handy little slot on it for
putting in envelopes. However, I don't see how to get Kword to make
use of it by orienting text the right way and formating it in the
correct position. Any
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I have never been able to get Star
Office to print! I need to look into that.
In the future, Kword is going to be fantastic. MS may have some real
competition from that corner.

I have found that Opera does support WAP site viewing. This is
helpful, although what would be more helpful would be an actual phone
emulator, so I could see the size and layout as it might appear on an
actual phone. That's not citical though; I can do everything with
Opera and just testit
Does anyone know if there is a WAP browser for Linux? I'm trying to
develop a WAP site, and instead of running up huge charges on my
mobile phone, I would like to be able to view the site directly from
Linux. Also, I guess I need to figure out how to get Apache to serve
WAP. I assume I do
Konqueror is a great web browser, but when I go to view source, it is
so small that I can't read it. I have to save it to a file, open a
terminal, and look at it with less. That is not a good way to do web
development.
I read the Kwrite instructions, and it talks about a menu to change
font
I initially bought the Logitech Pro, which has a high resolution and a
CCD. It porbably gives great photos, but the guys at Logitech don't
want me as a customer, so I returned it (Logitech doesn't publish any
specs for their products so there are no Linux drivers). Instead, I
got the D-Link
I have DSL, and I have a friend who has DSL, and he has a little USB
camera (logitech?) attached to his Windows computer. I don't have one
of those cameras but I could buy one. What I am wondering is, is
there some kind of software we could use to stream video to eachother,
and/or do audio
Thanks. I will try that when I get a card reader. In the meantime,
based on some other postings I saw on this list about mounting floppy
and zip disks, I put in a line in /etc/fstab to mount the camera, and
a desktop icon to the mount point, and have been able to view and
transfer the
I have a new digital camera (Canon Powershot) and it's great. Now I
want to print some of these photos out. I have found two photo
printers (one from Canon and the other from Epson) which can print
these photos out. These printers can interface directly to the
camera, or take a CF card
Konqueror is the coolest browser I've ever seen, and one of the neat
features is that it seems to pick up icons from the websites it
visits. How do I get it to do that with my website?
Second question: How do I get Java to work with it? This is LM8.0 on
i386. Java just doesn't seem to run
Ok, it's time for me to finally buy a new camera, and it's going to be
digital this time. My top pick right now is the Cannon Elph Powershot
300. Like most digital cameras these days, it comes with a USB port
instead of a serial port.
Well, I've never used a USB port for anything under any
