I have been filling my 650 up while still sitting on the bike, holding
it upright. I fill it up to about 1 inch below the rim. I have never
had gad leak out when I put it on the side stand, even right after
filling it up.

Yes, it's not a 2 way vent though. Allows air in, but fumes stay out.
If the vent gets blocked, well...

Do you know if '83 650 body parts will fit?
I have (what I think is) a '83 Nighthawk 650. Gas tank and both plastic
side panels are in good shape. Side panels in particular have no cracks and
the pegs on the back are intact. I also have the tail piece.

I've heard the term vapor lock used specifically when talking about
airplanes or cars that are fuel injected. The term is related to gas
that is in a fuel line that evaporates creating a bubble that can not
be pushed through the line. The solution is indeed to get the fuel

Years ago I had a similar problem with my V45 Sabre, After riding 30-40 miles
on a hot day the bike wouldn't start. My mechanic diagnosed it as "vapor lock".
After waiting 30 minutes it was fine. Said the remedy was to fill tank only
2/3 full. I also noticed I rarely had the problem when I us
