Hey everyone, just a quick follow up. Matt (aka Stumpi) sold the same
filter cover off a 1979 CM400A which was a perfect match. It came in the
mail today, I installed it, and took it for a quick 20 minute test ride.
Everything is performing as it should. Thanks everyone for your advice,

Upon further inspection I find that they appear to be a direct swap.
I didn't actually try it but the shape appears to be the same, down
the size of the bolt head. Send me an email if you'd like it.

I've got a '79 CM400A that is getting put up on Craigslist as a parts
bike here, shortly. I'll check when I get home tonight if the filter
cradle is a direct swap with my '82 450, if it is gimme $25 plus
shipping and I'll have it on you're door step asap.

I would check it for flatness, you may have tweaked it and they maybe
the cause of it not sealing. Another possibility is that the heat
from welding it may have warped the casting.

I read in the service manual that one should clean the oil screen periodically.

I had a similar issue this past summer...
Let's put it this way: It became a learning experience.
I over-torqued the drain bolt. After slapping myself around out in the
garage, I:
. Dropped the oil pan. (If you do this, make a diagram of bolt
locations! They are different sizes.)
. Had a new heli
If the threads on the bolt seem OK you may be able to buy a tap the correct
size and run it in the pan to clean up those threads. The hardest part is
starting it, be gentle.

Thanks Paul and HRM,
I believe that the bolt is the right size -- it is a 17 mm, as the
Clymer manual indicates, but I suspect it was forced in: it was very
difficult to get out. Happy to hear that it's not a difficult thing
to get done (though some other folks suggest that the whole oil pan

Hey Ze'ev,
Like Hotrod Mama says, it appears that someone used a wrong-sized bolt last
time the oil was changed. You will need to get a new bolt and thread your
hole to the new bolt. If this is something you're not comfortable doing,
you'll need to get a mechanic to help. The good news is it's not
That's not a very good sign. Is there metal on just the bolt or is it in the
bottom of the pan in which you drained the oil?
It sounds like either the wrong bolt was used or it was forced in
cross-threaded. You may have to re-thread the hole for another bolt.
Bummer!
