Hello everyone. I was using OpenSolaris 2008.05, but discovered that the Sun
Ray software does not play nice with it. I've been using Solaris on and off, so
I'm far from a Guru. I've gotten the impression that OpenSolaris = New School,
and Nevada = Old School in terms of installation, feel, etc.

There are *NO* patches for the operating system. There is a patch for
StarOffice8
and one for SUNWvts. Use "pca". http://www.

(The *original*. of which IPS tries{!} to be a clone of.)

thank you, very useful guide.
I tried a fresh reformat and install of snv99 and it installs a grub version
that can only read v12 ZFS... so I had to install snv97 so it will create a v12
rpool, then do an image-update, i will just hold for a while before upgrading
my rpool again.

Thank you for the answer.
what about at differing speeds? a quad core tends to be slower mhz wise then a
dual core.
Is ZFS good at multi threaded operation?
Also, if I have the option to, should I enable or disable hyper threading?

I've never tried a hotswap myself but a previous discussion may be of help:

If you are seeing speed issues where you think there shouldn't be you can

daveu,
After a shut down/restart all disks show up normal in the BIOS and show up with
# format.
However, that does not really solve the problem. The disks should should be hot
swappable, no?

At the moment that is a gap. This was also a gap for other platforms
considered for the PowerPC platform (Sony PS3, Apple PowerMacs), but I

Still no sign of it, the latest ISO download is still at b99 for DVD & b98 for

What are the chances that this will one day rival apt for selection, frequency
of updates and speed. I really love opensolaris, but find that I'm compiling a
lot of my own packages from source which defeats the purpose a little. However
I have to say other than the package manager this is the be

The Core Quads have a higher instruction per clock ratio. That means
they're faster at same clock.

No. It's just a matter of whether the SFW consolidation can
integrate the module in time. I am working with them to try
and make this happen, and am hopeful.

release.
