First question is can 5.1 surround sound be played via an MP3 file?
Also, I'm looking for a very rich audio file to play for someone to demonstrate
the surround sound features of my Bose system. It came with a DVD with some
good audio on it, but it's not very blind-friendly.
I'd like

Hi!
I don't know whether this would be of any use but I have several multi
channel DTS CD'S here, if this Bose system has a DVD as part of it or
can connect a DVD through a digital in then you'll be able to make use
of these DTS recorded CD'S.

if your looking to test surround sound options, you should get the roy
orbison black white dvd. its dts, its also available on bluray. but the
sound to demonstrate surround sound formats is beyond amazing. i use this in
my highend system and the recording is just over the top for sound quality.
The Olympus portable recorders have been discussed a lot lately, and I could
buy one of those. But I already have an iPod Touch, and was wondering about
just using that as a portable recorder. The built-in mic isn't very good, but
sufficient for most voice recordings. Is there a high-quality
Hi!
I guess if you have the lord of the rings on dvd you can get such great
surround sound from that too.
I have it but haven't got time to listen to it.

Dave,
these might sound like common sense suggestions but I was thinking
nearly the exact same thoughts you were. I know that there are some mics
that are omnidirectional and they might be from iriver? But just a voice
mic isn't horribly expensive, well unless you want like a pa mic I
Hi!
My favourite subject smile, I've been down that road before.
I use Fire Field recorder though it hasn't been updated for quite some time.
Now here's where things become a little tricky. If you're using Fire Field
Recorder for quality recordings you'll want some external microphones and
Oh yeah, that too. That might be ausom too. If you have it, use that then.
The point is to show how theater like the system is no? Well, this will
prove it.

will have phantom power and all that studio stuff apparently, and it'll

What's that got to do with everything? Weren't we talking about using an iPod

I'll wait till I see this new Olympus recorder before making any comment, don't

Oh, not much. I guess my point was mainly that it's better to have a
dedicated recorder like you said, and that one will have all the cool stuff,
and it's affordable. What's more, it can do more than an Ipod can. I mean,
whilst we are on that, can the Ipod multi track for instance? There are
Can the iPod multi track? Well yep, it can actually as I have a multi
track recorder for it smile.

Dave,
No problem! I should have mentioned Gig Addy actually smile and Garage

The product I mentioned initially Fire Field Recorder is - as far as I
know - only a 2 track recer though it has everything one could want in a
2 track recorder only problem is that it sampling rate only goes up to
I bet those Olympus recorders cost an arm and a leg and a few fingers. LOL.
All jokes aside, they do cost quite a bit of money and it is hard for
someone who is on a limited income to purchase one.
I would love to hear one of the Olympus recorders in action as well.

I'm not knocking the Olympus recorders as I'm sure they're great pieces of
equipment but some people seem to have a thing about talking devices for some
reason and they seem to automatically figure that just because they talk then
they're better than devices which don't smile.

Hello,
I'm trying to reduce the number of speakers I have for audio output from a
batch of computers I use in my office at work. In days of old I plugged
several computers into a mixing board but that board quit working years ago.
I'd like the audio from all the computers to play on one set
What would you think of using a passive mixer of some kind? as long as it
isn't padded down to much, you could run it into a main audio amplifier with
a set of speakers.

They don't really cost that much, but they do have tha advantage of speach

Depends on what you're prepared to spend! For example you can buy a better DAC
to hook up to an iPod, this can then be hooked up to your audio system etc.

$300.00 doesn't sound too bad, considering how much you used to have to
spend for a multi track cassette recorder. The one I have in storage went
for $1100.00 back in the 90s. I sure wasn't expecting the one everyone's
talking about to be as low as $300.00. I was expecting it to be higher
