Regarding copyright on images.
On the Noritsu machine I work with, I didn't have acess to EXIF data until
after I installed Irfanview, which I had to bring from home.

I would say: netpbm is exactly what you need, but it may be a bit low-level.
For if you don't know it: it's a (huge) set of command-line tools that
