Actually, using VNC you can even get GUI access with a 'local' ssh
forward of the VNC port.
Been there, done that, it works.

you *might* get an IPSec connection going, but NAT on your laptop/remote

You don't need putty on a linux box as OpenSSH is installed. Depending
on your distro, the server may not be running or not even installed.
