Tried what you suggested but am still left with the same problem!
When the mplayer test runs I can listen to all the stations, but when
it comes to the squeezebox I still get stuck on the connecting screen!

The lame issue may not be relevant to your connect problem.
Which stream are you trying to connect to? BBC can take a while to
come up.

I downloaded lame and unzipped it into the bin file. Still the same
problem. I have tried most of the streams with no success.

Unfortunately it seems like the slimserver tag reading method doesn't
read some of the custom tags which are part of the MP3 standard. The
ORIGARTIST is one of the tags that aren't read. The good idea is the
MP3 library which slimserver uses is able to read all the tags if used

tune in to Radio 1 live, decode the stream and send it to /dev/null.

Oh, something else I noticed that I forgot to mention.
If I navigate to a track in the current playlist (not the Now Playing song),
and press and hold a number button to set a rating, it sets the rating for the
currently playing track, not the selected track.

Not sure why the station won't play direct but if you uncheck the Server
Setting/File Types/Windows Media (built-in) - the station will play
using decoding on the server.
