Yes, Spotty has an option to expose Squeezeboxen as Connect speakers.
YMMV... unfortunately it's a bit fragile, but mostly works.

As the title says, players disappear after a day or so. Right now, I
have no idea how to make them available again. Here's what I did so
far:
- Uninstalled Spotty
- Stopped LMS
- Removed Cache/spotty.*, files and directory
- Removed prefs/plugin/spotty.prefs

I did some more tests. First of all, I had "Always use Helper
Application for Streaming" activated in the SPH settings of LMS.
Unchecking this option gave the following results:
My Setup for test#1:
account#1 - boom
account#1 - duet
account#1 - SPH plugin
account#2 -

I think it makes sense: SB Radio/Touch can use idividual accounts. But
all other players which depend on SPH or Triode's plugin share the same
account, which likely is shared with one of the other devices, too.

deleted the spotify app from mysb.com and reinstalled it again. Then I
was able to associate my spotify accounts to the various players without
a problem.

I think you're talking about the Spotify Protocol Handler or Triodes
Plugin. Those are only necessary for older SqueezeBoxen. So it should be
possible in your example, to enter your wife's credentials in SPH/Triode
and yours directly in the Official Spotify Menu.

librespot), the UX is hopelessly poor so far.

control all my devices from spotify because i have installed the airplay
plugin and all of the lms devices act as airplay devices. And spotify
can see them and control them...
I think your approach isn't totally wrong in its principles. It's just
not ready for prime time yet :-). We'd indeed need a wrapper application
around librespot, exposing control feature (play, queue, stop etc.) and
serving the data in a way we can consume in LMS. That's pretty much what
