Hello!
I am about to receive some Duos (210, 230 and 270c) along a couple DuoDocks
and a MiniDock.
I wonder which OS is best suited for them. RAM will be around 10-12Mb. I am
interested in using Ethernet with the Docks.
Thanks!
JOSE
I heard there's AOL for OSX - is that what you have?
Cheers

Thanks to everyone who responded to my email re. the 3400 batteries and high

I have had very good results from 7.5. It is relatively small, something very

You have to turn off AppleTalk (in the Chooser).
It helps to turn it off in the AT control panel, and switch it to
remote or ethernet as well.

Stick w/ 8.0 or 8.1... OS 8.6 is very real in it's 24MB suggestion -
a normal install will readily use 24MB of RAM. That will leave you
with just 8MB for your applications...
Unless you have RAM doubler or want to waste your battery time w/
virtual memory, that is.

Hi All!
A friend gave me a Powerbook 170 that won't go.
I charged up and recycled the battery with a conditioner and it holds a
charge, but the Mac doesn't do ANYTHING when I press the start button.
There is no hard drive, but I don't think it would need one just to bring
up the screen and ask
Has anyone tried the PCMCIA virtual memory trick with a Smartmedia
card? I need to purchase a Smartmedia reader to transfer files
to/from my sampler, so I would like to try this on my 1400.
Or will I need to get a dual-format reader, and use a Compact Flash
card for VM?

David Clae Gason,
AHA! It now appears that the person who gave it to me tried to plug in a
20v power supply.
Not GOOD!
Is there a fuse in a Powerbook 170?
THANKS!

Last month I installed 8.1 (via 8.0) on my 1400 and have been very happy
with it. I notice that you said 8.0 - 8.1, in case you weren't aware, is a
free upgrade that you can find on the Apple site, either as one big
download, or as parts. It's my understanding that the upgrade is well

some will say 8.6, others 9.1.
If 8.6 does what you want, stay there. I have 9.1 on one w/80MB RAM and
it's very nice; seems more responsive and snappy than desktop Macs with
similar 40Mhz bus and the like.
I swapped out the original 1.3GB HD with a 4GB HD as soon as I got it.

My 3400/200/144MB/5GB came with 9,1 but ran best (and fastest) under 8.1.
