but when I upgrade a desktop machine
from an 8.5.1 install (CD specifically for a BW G3, but it seems to wok on
my beige), to 8.6, via the general Apple update, I always seem to have a
problem hanging at startup, that is solved by removing the Iomega driver
that 8.5.1 installs.

hooked to a modem. When I want to print, I have to unhook the modem

just remove the trackball and clean the rollers that are in there.

that's exactly what I ended up doing.
I found a cd of System 7.5 that had the disk images on it.
So I copied them to my good ol Mac Classic and then made 8 install
floppies.
The 540c has been working fine ever since.
The only bad part of this whole thing was that I lost all
that and I would get errors and the install would abort
itself.
Apple has a 500 series service manual available for DL. Shows takeapart
procedures, troubleshooting, etc.
I'll have to look that up, just in case I run into anymore problems

Am I correct in assuming that the PowerBook Duo 2300c uses the same RAM
cards as the previous Duos? I don't see anything in the Apple manuals
developer notes that suggest different.

Someone on the list asked about shutting down pb on freeze. I've
never had a problem when I've pulled out the power supply. Of course
you can hold down the shift option command keys and push the power
off button and it should restart. Hope this helps

There is an invisible file on the root of every file-shared volume called
AppleShare PDS. Also in the Preferences folder of the System Folder there is
a folder called File Sharing that contains files relating to this stuff.
Perhaps they have become corrupt? One needs a utility (like ResEdit, for
if you're using an HFS+ disk for SCSi Dick Mode you must be
connecting to a drive running at least 8.1 -- in this case I'm
running 8.6, so that's not an issue -- but surely you don't have to
be running at least the same VERSION of the OS on both machines, do
you?
