I think the best way is to do a clean install. Also I think 7.5 will be
peppier than 8.
I'm currently running 7.5.5 on my 5300ce even though I could run
Someone with more knowledge may have a better answer, but I think you
can boot from the floppy then make a ram disk, copy over the system
from the floppy and boot from the ram disk and then maybe install the
cd operating system. YMMV, and good luck.

Actually I'm running 9.2.2 on my 3400c 240mhz ram maxed out and it's
quite a bit zippier than 8.6 or 9.1. The finder is much, much faster.
I would recommend at least trying 9.2.2 if you can.

Does anyone know what type of battery the 3400/240 takes as its PRAM battery?
I can't find this information in the original user manual or the
take-apart manual.
Thanks,

Hello,
We had a discussion not long ago about re-packing battery packs in 1400's.
But what I would like to know, is if one goes to the trouble of having the
battery inside the battery pack replaced, is it not possible to put a
different type of battery in?? Like a Li-Ion for example. Anyone know
experience. Thanks,
Gerald

Sorry to display my ignorance, but what's an Apple Presentation
For all you clever types:
Purchased a Samtron 76V 17 monitor for my 3400c PB and found it would
only work on the lowest resolution (640x480) with mirroring as that was
the only res refreshing at 60Hz. 800x600 and 1024 etc refreshed at 85Hz.
Very sad as it was on sale with a terrific rebate.

I was thinking of putting a left over hard drive from a Lombard in my

Also, I seem to remember reading that it is tricky to change hard

in my searching I've come to the conclusion that you have to use OS X

Yep, which means it's also 1.1 on your 8500 unless you've hacked X on
there. Even then ...
Would appreciate your knowledge and suggestions
Hi Folks!
I'm new to powerbooks and this list and hope I can tap all your apparent
wisdom. I recently acquired an excellent loaded PB 3400/180, and would
like to use USB with it to enable me to use an IDE/USB hard drive to
back up the drives on my 3400 as well as my 8500/G3 using retrospect.

It's pretty slow on the 5300 but it can be installed and does work.

9.1 ran ok on my 5300. But I like the way 8.6 with ram doubler and speed
doubler run. Also it seems that all the junk from M$ slowed down my
5300. So I've trashed it and it seems to have a slight speed boost.
