Hello all. The powerbook 1400 has a revovable book cover that you can
customize. Apple released a kit of 7 bookcovers, printed double sided,
(apple part number 600-4101B) that you can use to dress up your mac. Also
on the origional powerbook system cd there is a copy of a template for

The plastic screen was standard on the 1400, along with a few preprinted
inserts. Since they were on PowerBooks, Apple called them "BookCovers".

This was a design feature you can buy (still) clear or opaque covers for the
1400 - and I understand there was a range of paper inserts designed for the
clear covers.
AFIK the clip on/slide on plastic covers are still available as Apple spare
Parts. I bought two charcoal ones a few months ago
Thanks to everyone for the help regarding the transparent top on the 1400s
(Just when U think U KNOW EVERYTHING about Powerbooks...!).
...but I must admit I am a bit DEPRESSED; with the funky pattern under the
transparent cover, I thought(!) I had stumbled onto Hunter Thompson's or Jerry

Back in the day I bought 2 1400's and both came with the clear insert
and a bunch of patterns that could be put in it. Its OEM alright.

Thankyou all for the recent replies,
I'm running Techtool Pro now, optimising the disk. With any luck, that will
work :)
I thought it may be the networking problem at first, but this happened from
the moment I installed a clean version of 8.6, so I didn't think that could
be it... Once the disk i

If the pauses are new, your hard drive may need defragging. Norton has SpeedDisk,
which is a defragging program in Norton Utilities. It would require starting from
the Norton CD. (Start the 1400 and hold down the option, command, shift and delete
keys together until the CD drive starts to mount.)

I have 64 Meg, and I don't use Virtual Memory... I thought about upgrading
to 9.
How much RAM do you have? 8.6 needs much more than 8.1. ( 32 or 48 vs 16?
Anyone remember exactly how much 8.6 likes vs what the docs say it requires?) I
ran 8.6 smoothly on 1400/117s with 64 Meg of RAM (VM off) before upgrading the
117s to G3 CPUs. 9.1 was slow on the 117s, but great with G3 u
Haha, yeah, I was :). I've since realised that buying the cheap card and
then the driver for it would be the same as just getting a card that works
from the start. So, obviously, I did that. Avaya Wireless Gold card

Works, but I had to upgrade to 8.6 to install
