The HHH crank PLAN is for 44x34x24 with 38T timing rings, and only the 44
aluminum---because small rings wear faster and timing rings--not sure if
the straight chainpath reduces wear enough to compensate for the aluminum
so we just went with steel. The cost diff was not a factor--we save a

Our old Santana has a triple XT crankset with 54-44-28 and 12-32 8-speed
cassette. We use the 44 unless we are going down hill or enjoying a
tailwind.

Ken,
Thanks for the feedback. I also plan on using our tandem on the paved
trails around NoVA and DC but we live in the "hills" of Arlington so a
triple is a must. I think I'll use a set of SLX rapid fire
shifters/derailleurs and a ten speed cassette out back.
This is our first tandem and my
Hi,
We tandem on local paved bike paths and canal towpath and usually choose
the level rides. Some rides we have gone up a few short steep hills. It's
a light mountain tandem with wide range gearing. The lower gearing is more
important because it is harder to go up a hill than down more so
Dave mentioned they might have a Silver crank available but it may also not
happen in time. I was also thinking about standard Sugino triple cranks
but this is our first tandem and I've done zero research on gear options.
We also chose orange which I was second guessing since I already have an

Alex,
I'll also go with the Silver if that's an option, triple for sure, the lows
are necessary.
Some folks go nuts on tandem large chainring size -- 54 or 56 is not too
hard to spot at a larger tandem rally, but for me that's not needed,
especially on a bike like the HHH. Even with a 48 we'
They are TBD still, rumor is there may be a Silver crankset option...but that's
only rumor. If that's the case I'll jump on it. If not, I may go with
Sugino's with bare arms or go nuts and get Herse tandem cranks. Either of
those options have room for chainrings a la carte, so I'm curious wha
Alex,
Are the options from Riv set yet? If so, perhaps I've missed it. What are
you considering? Something else?
