Nice looking bike. How do you decide what length stem to use with each bar?

I like them all, though I admit I like the moustache bars best, because
that's what I would want.

Thanks for asking. I feel like a freak because I see all these Rivbike
owners with long stem extensions and here I am on 6 and 7cm stems.
Something wrong with me? Ha ha.
*The short story:* Pain and comfortable reach dictated stem length.
*The long story:*

The Giant TT is 53cm c-c.
My 52 Sam is 55.8cm with a c-c 6 degree slope.
55 Bleriot is 55.5 c-c. with a 2 degree slope, I think.
One day I'll try the Bleriot and the Sam set up just like the Giant with
drops and see if that works.
I wanna do that now with the Bleriot but need t
@ Patrick:
I have tried what you mention with raising the bars with drops and
staches on the Bleriot and Sam and those angles give me low back pain for
days.
I have found that I have to be at or below saddle height to be comfortable
with drop bars. Though if it is a too long reach like the Sam
Michael, you're in Elliott city MD, aren't you? You should come try my 51
Bleriot sometime, I'm not too far away. It's set up wi drop bars, not noodles
but you could get an idea if the frame is a better size for you. I'm not
looking to sell it, just offering a comparison. (Not riding now but
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the kind offer. That would be great. Sounds like fun. I just
emailed you.

Buying a bike in a shop doesn't help much. The stock handlebar height is
often too low and you can't experiment with bars. Some shops will flip a
stem or adjust spacers but most won't swap stems just for a test ride.
Trying to judge ride quality without a dialed in fit may or may not be

I'm always surprised by the long stem crowd as well. I have long arms and
long torso but I still run 7cm and 8cm stem extension on my several drop
bar bikes with the bar at or slightly above the saddle.
I have found that raising the stem one cm makes much more difference to

The Nitto stem can be modified quite easily simply machine or saw it to
the same angle and shorten the through bolt but..Nitto sells shorter
stems for when you don't want to jack the bars toward heaven. As far as the

I looked into the Rando bars NITTO makes, and although they are a narrower
bar than Noodles, the reach is longer at 110, and I think the Noodles are
95mm.
I'll have to recheck. I know one of them is 110.

Michael, the bike is beautiful. It's a shame that it's not comfortable for
you. It looks like you're doing everything you can, and putting a lot of
money into trying to work it out. I think you possibly nailed it when you
said the TT was too long though. Just looking at those pics, it appears

David is right -- the tt seems to be too long if you want to have your bar
below saddle. Grant designed the Sam for high bars; I had to raise the bar
considerably above saddle height in order to get a comfortable reach, and
that made the handling feel off. Even on my Fargo the bar is only 1" above
It's that extra 2.8cm that's doing it. I think you need a smaller frame if
you want drops.

I have a stem with an adjustable angle. Between quill height and angle, I
can put the bars pretty much anywhere. Yes, it's uglier than a Nitto. But
very versatile. I'm still dialing in the perfect combo on my Rivendell
road. Once I get it figured out, I can buy a fixed stem with that
reach/ang
And *most *shops will steer you toward a MCRB with the bars 4" below the
saddle.
