While I can't speak for RedHat, I'd assume it's because the default
kernel has IP forwarding compiled in, but it's not something that's
needed on most machines

Why are you trying to build it from the SRPM? If you haven't done an
"rpm -bp" yet, the kernel source may not have necessary patches applied.
Install the binary RPM and use that, instead.

Actually if you just installed, it may be simplier to reinstall it.
When it comes to the LAN bit, enter NE2000, then specify options.

with 32MB RAM.
When either booting off the floppy, CD-ROM, or the DOS autoboot program,
it will say:
loading linux .
(Then it will start detecting hardware as usual)
(It does that for about 5 seconds

I just recently switched from Slackware to RedHat 5.0 and I've noticed
one major problem. Well, not really a problem but more an annoyance.
Untaring files takes about 5 times longer on my new RedHat system. It
took almost 10 minutes to untar the 2.0.33 kernel source file.
