I have noticed in Redhat 8 that ipchains is not longer available. This is a
problem for me because i have some elaborate scripts that I wrote about a
year ago that use ipchains exclusively. I have heard that the stateful
environment provided by iptables and netfilter are better; however, I would

I am currently using Cygwin to connect to my Red Hat 8 server. I have
enabled XDMCP, and I am using gdm as the desktop manager. I would really
like to have the ability to customize the startup login screen. The local
gdm logon screen can have themes and customizations made in the gdmsetup
program.
Run nmap localhost to see if ssh is listening on port 22. If it is you might
want to try temporarily disabling your firewall rules too see if that may be
the problem - ipchains -F

That's a good question. I have a Palm m515 and I have not been able to sync
either. I have followed all of the previous threads regarding this issue but
I cannot get it to sync with my laptop or my desktop both of which run Red

How do i configure programs to startup automatically in X. I currently run
RH 8.0 but have found no way to setup programs to start automatically when I
enter the GNOME desktop. I thought maybe the .xinitrc file would be used
for this but I cant seem to make it work. Any ideas are appreciated.
Th
Try
iptables -L to list the chains. Then you can remove all firewall rules
with iptables -F

I am trying to use nautilus to browse network shares. I am using the smb://

It would be great to have a desktop icon like in Windows that will
automatically minimize all apps to the taskbar so that you can gain quick
access to your desktop. Is there such a feature in Red Hat linux?
Also... how can i run Ximian Gnome in Red Hat 8?

I would like to be able to change the login graphic/theme for the graphical
display manager when connecting over the network via Cygwin. Are there
themes available for this that work in the same way as the standard gdm
themes?

I have 2 Linux servers on a small test LAN. I am trying to setup sendmail

have setup Sendmail to allow connections other than localhost (127.0.0.1).
Only one of the servers is configured to use sendmail, the second server ha
I have read that you can use an existing BIND DNS implementation for MS

must support SRV & DDNS? I am aware that BIND supports these in the new
version, however; I have never had the opportunity to set it up until now.

I know that both GRUB and LILO have startup images associated with them. I

Ok
Ok guys... I'm still having some problems. I have now tried both LILO and
GRUB boot managers. I edit the respective config files to point to the new
kernel. The installed kernel in Redhat 8.0 uses the option "root=LABEL=/"
to define the root fs such as in grub.conf line:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-19
Great tip but why doesnt this work with GRUB?
