The problem is the Linksys card. I had this same problem about a month
ago, and after doing a google search, found this to be a common issue
with that Linksys card under both Windoze and Linux. I replace the two
Linksys cards with Netgear cards, and poof, no more problem.

Actually you can get an NE2K card/clone running with Red Hat 5 right out
of the box. I have two isa ethernet cards in my system, one is a 3Com
Etherlink II (3C503), and one is a NE2K clone. I am not using the 3Com
card at the moment.

With my RedHat 5.0 I did the same thing and from stock it found the card at boot up.
Later I did some kernel changes and then I had to recompile the kernel with support
for that NE2000
I seem to remember that it was not obvious where to find
