sorry if this is a very basic question but i'm new to RedHat (ex-Cobalt).
i have 2 Redhat Boxes (7.2) which both show
# rpm -qa kernel
kernel-2.4.18-18.7.x
logging into RHN i see that there are rpms for an updated kernel (2.4.20).
the auto errata update is failing at a iptables errate since this

Hi
I am trying to build a customer 2.4.20-18.7 kernel on a Redhat 7.3 box,
everything works fine and the kernel compiles okay, the only thing is that
the tar.gz that is created and the following rpm's appear to have the "-"
missing before the extraversion i.e. instead of
kernel-2.4.20-18.7custom.t
Thanks to everyone who helped me with this. When I re-ran the update
agent after installing the older kernel sources from CD, it offered to
get me the newer kernel sources.
I then just followed the kernel how-to and tweaked as necessary. I've
learned that it's important to save your configurati

Dear Kamal,
Even though i haven't done a full installation
of RedHat 7.3 , ( as i don't have the the full installation cd with me as
of now . but planning to purchase it in few days ) , i have seen that by
default you will not NTFS kernel support in RedHat 7.x series i

OK, I admit it, I'm new to Linux. Although, in a former life I did
administer SunOS systems. But for the sake of argument, let's assume I
know nothing about Linux/UNIX other than how to spell them.
I recently installed RedHat 7.3 (2.4.18-3/Valhalla) at home. Using the
update agent, I got all k

Step 2 is my question? can you run a X verison of menu config, I remember sometime back ; like RH ver 6.1 there was a X verison of menu config. In redhat is it make config? I am looking for an X verison of make menuconfig..
Thanks Brian

Whoops! I should have mentioned that was done with make bzImage so that's
the compressed size :) I'd love to have the kernel that size though!

Kernel.org is where I get my goods from :)
Keep in mind that the latest stable kernel (last time I checked) is
2.2.16 and redhat's latest rpm's are 2.2.16-3, so unless you wanted a
development kernel, using the rpms is just fine. Regarding the how to,
it's been a while since I read it, but if yo

www.kernel.org (the official kernel archives site) is where the kernel
archives are located.
Now.. Keep in mind that the last time I offered this info (last night) I
got blasted for it.
So, no, the kernel source isn't packaged only in RPM format... you just
have to look for it outside of RedHat'

OK, this is a stupid question but I got to ask. Is the kernel source only
packaged in the RPM's? I read the How-to configure the kernel and it keeps
telling me to go find the linux-x.y.z.tar.gz file but I can't find it
anywhere on the disk or on the ftp site. I can only find the
kernel-source.2.2.
In following the directions in Kernel-HOWTO, I've successfully recompiled the kernel
and used the 'make bzdisk' option to copy it all to a floppy, then reboot from the
floppy, and everything works great, it even finds my parallel port ZIP Drive (which
was the purpose of this whole exercise)...
I myself always use the tar.gz for my kernel
cd /usr/src
mv linux linux-2.0.32
tar zvxf linux-2.0.33.tar.gz
rm linux.2.0.33.tar.gz (i do this because i have untared it over my kernel
after making changes before =)
mv linux linux-2.0.33
ln -s linux-2.0.33 linux
cd linux
and rebuild it!

the RH updates directory on the RH ftp site and d/l all the latest RPMS.
When I actually had a look at them I realised that the latest kernel source
