That is a common misconception. Computer cases (especially good ones) are

Hi Bill
I would assume that underclocking may be safe...I have never really
tried it..a few years back when motherboards were littered with
jumper settings, you could just about bet 50/50 if a system was locking up
etc, and had a good heat sink, that a jumper was wrong..today
Funny this is basically what I have done, and the cyrix box has been
running all night (with some softwre runnign that is supposedto put a load
on it) !
I left the case cover off. I moved the cdrom to a bay that allowed more
air flow between the power supply and the rest of the case (only fan in
Gonna get me a K6-2 or 3 sometime next year.

Charles,
If you don't want to go for air fans, well, some have been experimenting
with water cooling systems. (Not me, though. :-)

The cpu feels cool (I can only feel the sides).
The motherboard (this is the cyrix 200) is a MPo76 Intel 430VX.
But I'm really going to show my ignorance here.
It has what looks like a heat sink on the board (below the cpu) that is
**very** hot.
What the hell is this and how do I cool it dow

Heat? Checked the fans? I've had AMD and Cyrix both do this and always due
to heat. Strange how Intel locks up with heat and AMD and Cyrix tend to shut
down/reboot?

Couple of points for you to think about.

Hi Charles!!!
If you are really into Hardware, you may want to take a look at "Upgrading and
Repairing PCs, Linux Edition" from Mueller (QUE). It comes with a bootable CD
with a Debian distribution that let you make diagnostics and other sort of
things.
On the other hand, there is a tool you may
