I am planning on installing RH 5.1 on a 486/33 that I have lying
around. My goal is to get RH 5.1 working (text mode only...no X)
and then install a MUD server. I only (at this time) have
a 200MB hard drive in the machine.
What are your recommendations for the most efficient way to

Hi, just installed RH 5.1 and noticed that the version of screen it
installed (screen-3.7.4-5.i386.rpm) had about a 2 or 3 second delay when
switching screens. I went back to the screen-3.7.4-1.i386.rpm package and
all works fine.
Anyone know why the 5.1 screen rpm is so slow
Regarding the Wu-FTPD problem with sendmail, the author of the
wu-ftpd admitted that he accidently had that 'feature' set up
in beta-16. He recently released an update , beta-17 that fixes
this (was announced to one of the redhat announced groups.

The method of upgrading the kernel on RH 5.1 described on www.redhat.com
(errata) is not working properly.
I installed RH 5.1 from scratch. Moved the new kernel rpm's to /tmp and
issued: rpm -Uvh *.rpm.

sendmail sets a default UID to run as, so if it is the same UID as ftp,

Just installed all the various bits and pieces for RH 5.1 on two machines
that were previously running 5.0.
Very smooth upgrade...
I rebooted, the boxes came up fine, and one of them, being a server
started being used immediately. People started downloading from it using

The IPX setup with linuxconfig is kind of broken. The IPX net number is
not remembered. Unfortunately the auto detect settings will not work
because of some kind of weird thing happening between the windows and
netware machines on the network. I have not been able to find where to

It is exercised when you compile your own kernel and reboot. The

Because I was unable to restart my RH5.0, init did not wanted to do the
job any more (after trying during 5 days !!!). I decided to make a backup
and to make an upgrade to RH5.1.
So I started to upgrade in FTP mode, that one started after a small
problem with the name server, si
