Since this is a box at home that I use for learning, I
always install everything. What if I were to mount each cd
and do rpm -ivh --force --nodeps --justdb *rpm.
I could then run up2date

Oddly enough, I had a similar problem on an smp development box
running Rawhide (beta) when I tried to upgrade to the new and
improved glibc set. Lots of "I can only do PRIVATE_DB" type
messages, rpm only worked from user accounts (not root) and no
ability to reverse the glibc change.

Yes, you can manually update the database, but you probably don't want to
do that. If you want to tell rpm a package is installed, (did I mention
you don't want to do this?) You can run:
rpm -ivh --justdb (perhaps --nodeps --force) /pat

to start using up2date...and realized that when my second hard drive
crashed, months ago, taking *all* of /var with it, that the rpm database
is gone.

I tried running RedHat Network and Update Agent for the first time yesterday
on my new RH 7.2 server. It downloaded many RPMs and began to install.
After every install, python crashed with a segv. Since it did not get to
clean up after itself, I ended up with two entried in the rpm database
