If all you need is default gateway then make sure that gated is not running (type '/etc/rc.d/init.d/gated stop' and then 'setup' -> select ntsysv to edit the run level so that gated does not restart next reboot) then you need to add the default gateway to /etc/sy

Take a look at the docs that come with pppd. If you compiled it your self they're in the directory you unpacked it. If you used rpm, then they're in /usr/doc/ppp-?.?.? I haven't tried it but that's where this info is. You may also want to look into using ipfwadm, and setup a firewall. http://www.
